Congrats to my High School football team for making it to Semi-state. Those that don't know Indiana High School Football, Semi-state is the final four. A win this Friday puts the Carmel Greyhounds into the state finals. This was their first Regional Win since 1996 and it is good to see this storied program getting back to their winning ways. Go 'Hounds!

Ok, so I'm a slacker. I had finals and plenty of traveling to do so I have an excuse. Memphis has blown one of my predictions, but the season is still young... most will be blown by the end of the season. Michigan will be a stiff test tomorrow and I fear that I will have plenty of acid indigestion. Fulmer's fat face was just on the TV... God I hate that man. I have been drinking a bunch of new beers so I will try to add a couple of new reviews tomorrow. I guess I picked a good year to start rooting for Everton - Go Blues. Icehouse is starting to effect my train of thought. Later.

So excited I can't hardly contain myself. I had the laptop out on the dinner table and I was playing a bunch of Notre Dame video clips so I could continue the indoctrination of my girls. Mainly stuff from last year, but also some historical stuff. Then the oldest asked if we could watch Rudy, so of course we did. I am so pumped. It's cooled off a little here in Memphis(mid 80's) so it feels more like football weather. Makes me want to put the pad on and go hit someone.

Talking out of my ass prediction #2: Brady Quinn will win the Heisman trophy.

Talking out of my ass prediction #3: University of Memphis Tigers go 9-3 with a win at Ole Miss.

Talking out of my ass prediction #4: The Tennessee Titans Cheerleaders will be more entertaining than the Titans' Offense. Titans go 6-10. I hope Jeff Fisher can weather this last storm. Next year should be much better.

Stone Coast brewery was the other brewery included in my anniversary present. I really think that other than Stout, IPA's are my favorite beer. If nothing other than the IPA style of beer came out of the English occupation of India then I think it was a good thing. Seriously though this is a damn good representations of the style. A really beautiful beer, a perfect golden color with a nice foamy white head. The fragrance of the beer tells you that you are in for a treat. If you don't like hoppy beer, then stay away from the IPA style, and especially this beer. DO NOT mix this beer with another. You will not be able to taste the other beer. I think that says alot about just how powerful the taste of this beer is... and should be. This beer is not for those who like the standard "American pilsener" ie. budweiser, miller, etc. If that is all you have had in the way of beer, then your in for a real shock if you drink this or any other IPA. For those of you who like the IPA style, do what you can to find some of this, it really does the IPA syle justice.

Brewery name aside this is a very nice beer. It has all the characteristics you are looking for in a wheat beer, namely it has a bright white light foamy head(reminiscent of meringue). The beer has plenty of carbonation and is a beautful shade of gold. The beer is cloudy, but anyone that has had a wheat beer knows this is typical of a wheat beer. The aroma is light and citrusy. The mouth feel is airy and you can feel the carbonation on the tongue. Although the hops are present the bitterness is not overwhelming. The citrus hint is there in the flavor but the overall flavor is dominated by the wheat. This beer goes down smooth and is perfect for enjoying on a hot summer evening. The after taste is not unpleasant but it is definitely strong. The best advice for that is Have another! Cheers.

SOMETHING NEW ALREADY

*Started training to run with my Dad and Sister in the race for the cure 5k in Little Rock. We then found out that even though men are affected by the disease(my Dad's mom died from breast cancer) we can not run in the race. Dad is pissed and has now withdrawn all support from the race, though he will still financially support the Susan G. Komen Foundation. We are now trying to find another 5k to run in in October in Arkansas. It will be my first 5k run.

*My brother who is a video game junkie got me a PS2(yes I know I am behind the times) for my birthday and I am now spending way too much time on it. My wife however has discovered a workout program for the PS2 called Eye Toy Kinetic and she is now on the PS2 more than I am.

*On the Cincy Reds trade: I like the trade in that it shows that we are trying to win. We are at least out there doing something to try and make the team better. It doesn't always work, but sometimes you have to take chances. Also it is nice that the Reds are still relevant on July 25th.

*So ready for football. I am so starved for football that I have been back on the Indiana High School football discussion forum. It helps a little, but their are some dudes that are way more into High School football than I am.

*I am sort of afraid to graduate. It is still a few months away but I am having some anxiety about finding a job that goes with my new degree but pays anywhere near what I am making now. Almost all of the decent jobs out there require 2-3 years experience to make even 5-8,000 less than what I am making now. I have no real future at my current job but it is good money now. The new field has limitless potential but it has a potentially devestating pay cut to get in.

*On July 20th my wife and I celebrated our 10 year wedding anniversary. I am particularly proud of this accomplishment as too many of our friends that got married in the 3-5 years after we did have gotten divorced. We've had our rough moments but I wouldn't undo any of the past 10 years for anything. We are friends, companions, partners, parents, and lovers. I don't think you can ask for more than that.

*Nicole is still weird. I just can't seem to bring myself to be mean to her anymore. I will try though.

* I think that Pippa, after World Cup and with the addition of the Israeli-Hezbollah war, has been having a bit of a blog identity crisis. She has posted some pretty funny stuff if you are into British humor, as I am. Check out the Brit Chick link to the left.

* My anniversary present was a Beer of the Month Club membership("That's the gift that keeps on giving all year long Clark") so I will try to post some beer reviews as I try some new ones.

Why I Hate University of Tennessee Football

Having been inspired by EDSBS I have decided to explore why I hate UT. So here are my reasons in no particular order:
1. Pus-gut himself

Thats right Phillip Fulmer I can not stand this man. Watching him on the sidelines makes me sick. The comparisons to Rockne because of the winning percentage was laughable. The second best part of last year was UT sucking and watching him have no clue what to do about it.
2. The color:

Even Cheerleaders and food look ugly in Orange.

The only benefit of this color is it makes Tennessee fans easy to pick out. It's called fan profiling: Know it, Love it.

3. THE FANS

My name is Legion: for we are many. And he besought him much that he would not send them away out of the country. Now there was there nigh unto the mountains a great herd of swine feeding. And all the devils besought him, saying, Send us into the swine, that we may enter into them.

Legions of them and all of them surround me. In Memphis they are intolerable. Always calling the talk shows to tell everyone how great they are. Amazingly they have been silent about their greatness the past year. Another great thing about them is they are insecure. They can neither make fun of their own team or participate in anything that makes fun of their team. My wife's family are all UT fans and they loved giving me crap about ND being down, but last year none of them wore their orange or wanted to discuss football at all.

4. It's totally irrational.

Damn you and your tasty frozen treats.

All of these other things spring from the fact that I just hate the vols. I can't point to one specific thing that really started it, if they switched coaches, changed colors, and their fans left me a lone, I would still hate them. It's like my hatred for the Ice Cream Man, I will always hate him although really he has done nothing to me

30 Sports Things To Do Before You Turn 30(I've done the bold ones... Probably all I will get to do/see in the next month and a half)
1. See the Kentucky Derby.
2. Catch a foul ball.
3. Hole a shot from the fairway.
4. Attend a NASCAR event - You just need to, trust me.
5. Attend a draft - Preferably the NBA or NFL (the other two major sports aren't nearly as entertaining, and if you attend the WNBA draft, don't tell anyone. Ever).
6. Hit the trifecta.
7. Win a title. In anything. It doesn't matter what.(Soccer: It was rec league but I don't care I was a champion once.)
8-10. Witness three championships in person. However you want to break that down.
11. Bowl above a 200 (in one game).
12. Compete in a triathlon. Marathons take way too much training, and 5K's are too easy. But entering one of the many mini-triathlons that take place over the course of a year is the perfect combination of achievement-without-having-to-completely-alter-your-lifestyle. A reasonably healthy person can, with some basic training, finish a quarter-mile swim, 10-mile bike ride, and 5k run without collapsing at the end like the guy in the Gatorade commercial.
13-15. Witness late game heroics. These are impossible to plan for, so you just have to see enough games to cover your bases here (no pun intended). Put a buzzer-beater in basketball, last-second FG or touchdown in football, and a walk-off home run at the top of your list. A sudden-death goal in hockey is also acceptable.
16. Other baseball abnormalities. Again, nothing you can prepare for, but catching a no-hitter, an unassisted triple play, or a player hitting for the cycle are all worthy feats to aspire to see with your own two eyes.(Does seeing a minor league pitcher hit 3 home runs count?Steve Avery Richmond Braves)
17. Beat Mike Tyson. Not literally, but in video game form.
18. Shoot par at Frisbee golf.
19. Win an NCAA Tournament pool.

23. Become the best of everyone you know at something.
24. Score a hat trick.
25. See one of the great rivalries in person. Eagles-Cowboys in the NFL, Montreal-Boston in the NHL, Cardinals-Cubs in baseball (trust me, it's more interesting than Yankees-Red Sox), or Duke-UNC in college hoops are some of your standard fare.
26. Gamble on sports in Vegas.
27. See a World Cup, or World Cup Qualifier.
28. Visit the various Halls of Fame. If you make it to the Baseball HOF in Cooperstown, NY, I recommend checking out the Broadcaster's Wing. Everyone inducted has a nice picture of themselves in coat and tie, looking professional, except for Harry Caray, who is pictured shirtless and in mid-yell. I kid you not.
29. Spend a weekend celebrating the holiday of college football.
30. See a fight. Take this to mean anything you want. Boxing is probably the easiest to plan for, but if your luck is good, try to catch a bench-clearing brawl in baseball or basketball. Hockey fights can be great too, but they happen too frequently to qualify here. Bonus points if the fight takes place in a rec league or (even better) charity softball game.(Double Points: A pick up football game, I was involved. Also I have seen much blood spilled on the ice of minor league hockey games.)

I have decided that it doesn't matter how much I hate my job. I have a great family, 2 cars that work, a nice house, my Mom and Dad now live within driving distance, and we are all relatively healthy.

SPEC Man. This is what they call me at work. It is a term of endearment. I know or can quickly access any of the specifications for the jobs we are building or the tests we are running. People I used to work for or used to work with will call me to find out specs.

I hate Memphis. I have lived in Cincinnati, Houston, Richmond Virginia, Indianapolis, and Memphis. Memphis is the worst. I can find something good to say about all of the other cities I have lived in.

I hate my job. If I did my job as poorly as I do it well, I will still get the same raise and would not get fired. I have no chance for advancement and no motivation.

Memphis + Conference USA = :(

I was over on ESG, and he had a pretty interesting discussion going about realigning the conferences. All of it is pure speculation because no one is going to change as long as they are all raking in buckets o cash. It did get me to thinking about the Memphis Tigers and C-USA.

There is little doubt that Memphis' relatively recent success is all in spite of C-USA. Talk around town is that they need to join a different conference. My question is always, Ok which one?

SEC - Owns the Memphis market with Ole miss, TN, Bama, and Arkansas. No way are they letting memphis in.

Big East - Too big, if they wanted them they would have taken them 2 years ago.

ACC - No chance.

Big 12 - Are they even looking, if they are it is not at memphis.

Big 10, PAC 10, - Doesn't make sense geographically.

Any other ideas to shoot down? I don't see where they could go from a multisport perspective, but would love someone to give me a viable option.

I know the name is awful but this park is cool. It is just a crap load of woods with 12 miles of bike trails in it. The only development in the whole park is a parking lot at the trail head and a few hand made wooden bridges over the creeks. I can walk out of my back door take about 35 steps be in the woods another 35 steps and I am on the trail. I don't cycle but I love hiking in the woods. I take the two dogs for a hike at least twice a week when weather allows. The great part is with the short fence across my backyard I really feel like I am in a rural subdivision.
For those that have been asking I live off the yellow trail in the NW corner of this map where the arrow says "to subdiv." right near the double gully.

I am very happy that Clausen committed early. I think it's very important to get a stud commit like him so all the other recruits will start to follow him to ND. EDSBS has a funny take on the whole ceremony, and I do think it is funny the amount of hoopla that is surrounding this kid. Went to Little Rock first thing this morning so I could see my mom before and after she had surgery on her neck. Everything went great and I am back in Memphis but I'm exhausted. One funny thing that happened was that while my sister and I were in the waiting room a woman walked in and said "Hicks, are there any Hicks in here?" I looked at my sister, she looked at me and we just busted out laughing.

Another beer review for ya. This is the perfect beer for me to show my beer snobbishness. One of my biggest pet peeves for craft, import, micro, or any beer that charges $6-10 a six pack, is for them to have a twist off top. C'mon have a little pride. Make me get a church key out to get to the sweet nectar of life. Anyway this is a good beer. It is very light and refreshing and was very nice on a hot muggy day. It had enough hops to let you know it was there but otherwise just went down smooth and easy. Nice big frothy head and plenty of carbonation. I think I like this better than Shiner Bock. If you can get one try it and enjoy.

I just heard a bunch of his stuff on the Wevl program Bleecker St. What stuck out the most was Willie Nelson's rendition of Marie. This has to be one of the most depressing songs I have ever enjoyed. A2 Arena Football

Ok, so Saturday I went to my first arena football game. It was in Little Rock and I went with my Dad and brother-in-law. It is not real football, but it was a nice substitute considering it is April. The coolest part was my Dad got tickets on the wall, first row baby. We were on the 5 yard line so the other end of the field on our side was a little hard to see, but it was well worth it. It was really a blast and I would definitely go again. I gotta finish my homework for Non-profit/Municipal Accounting(Yech!), hope everyone else had a great weekend.

Everyone at work thought it was "cool" or "ballsy". I guess if I ever graduate, and get a real job, I will have to have normal facial hair. This is definitely a benefit of working in the construction industry. The wife really hates the name "Friendly Mutton Chops", but when you've been married to and idiot like me for almost 10 years what are you going to do?

What happened to the western genre? I think that the loss of 1 great western flick a year is a real loss for the movie industry. I think EDSBS had a great point that the great alpha male actors have gone to the wayside.
Hollywood has decided that men be wimpy and emotional(or gay). Even the last great cowboy has been emasculated. (Bridges of Madison County). The last great western movie I can remember being made was Tombstone. Its not that others haven't tried but they always seem to fall flat. Unforgiven was another great one. Too many of the new westerns are too much like rock videos, or they have a weak leading man.

Memphis Weather

Weather here is crazy tonight, but I think that the local weather men live for this. They have been going non-stop for at least 4 hours. Anyway, if anyone other than todd reads this let me know if your weather people are like this also. I have lived here for 12 years... God I hate that... and I lived in quite a few other cities, but Memphis seems like the worst for overhyping weather. We had some pretty impressive golf ball size hail mixed with marble size hail, I went out afterwards and brought some in for my girls. They thought it was really cool.
UPDATE:
I just realized that it sounded bad when I wrote "if anyone besides todd" line. I just figured he was the only one besides myself actually looking at this blog. So comment away if you would like todd.

If you are into music and hate most radio stations, heres a good one. I listen to it for bluegrass and old country but they have all kinds of stuff. WEVL 10:00 to 14:00 on Wednesdays are can't miss radio for me.

New Facial Hair

I have been wearing a goatee for about 3 months now. Before that I had a massive(about 4 months of growth) Hollywoodian. I grew it on a dare, decided I liked it and just let it get out of control. Although not officially listed on the OAFH website, I think that I am going to shave my goatee down to a Fu Manchu. I will try to post a picture, but my wife will probably shave it off in my sleep. Any other great ideas for my facial hair let me know. If I can find a picture of the Hollywoodian I will post it also.

Couldn't even watch the game it hurt so bad. The shooting was horrendous. We couldn't buy a basket. On a side note, I watched parts of Guess Who with Bernie Mac and Tool Bag. Tool Bag doesn't ruin the movie and it has some pretty funny moments. The whole evening was made bearable by some really good beer. I must recommend Young's Oatmeal Stout. I followed the Stout with a nice bottle of Harps, and a bottle of Warsteiner Premium Dunkel. It was quite the Trifecta. If the Tigers could have thrown a rock in the ocean... their words not mine... then it would have been just about the perfect night.
